Additionally, in 2009 El Sol was awarded a grant from First 5 San Bernardino to develop a postpartum depression education curriculum for use among Spanish speaking women and families in San Bernardino County. This contract supports mental health initiatives surrounding pregnancy and the postpartum period, especially within minority populations. As a result of this project’s success in San Bernardino County and continual perceived community need, El Sol expanded postpartum depression services to Riverside County through the Mamas y Bebes curriculum in 2011. This project utilizes promotores de salud to provide structured six week classes on dealing with stress during and after pregnancy and how to access local health services.

Promotores have also strengthened trust between El Sol and community members by providing community-based prevention education and linkage services in culturally and linguistically appropriate ways (e.g. teaching module-based courses, teaching in non-traditional locations such as churches, faith-based organizations, living rooms, etc.). Promotores’ experience integrating the health knowledge, outreach skills, and beneficial relationships demonstrates their capacity to provide outreach and community-based health-related services and education in a home-based setting.
